It’s very hard when your baby is crying and you don’t know why or what to do. Believe it or not, your baby will sense your emotions. They will know when you are frustrated then it becomes a circle of emotions between the two of you.
Every baby is different BUT they ALL cry, it’s how they communicate, it’s the only way they can they can’t speak. At first, it may be difficult to determine the different cries and what baby needs from you. Are they tired, dirty diaper, hungry, in pain, gassy or over stimulated? Take a deep breath and relax so you can better hear what your baby needs. NEVER EVER shake your baby.
NEVER NEVER shake a baby
Shaken Baby Syndrome occurs when a baby is shaken. The blood vessels in a baby’s head cannot tolerate the impact of shaking and can break.
- Each year about 1,000 children die from Shaken Baby Syndrome.
- Death, brain damage, mental retardation, seizures, or blindness may result from shaking a baby.
- Shaking usually happens when parents or caregivers become frustrated or angry when they are not able to stop the baby from crying.
- Shaken baby syndrome is 100% preventable.

If you are frustrated take a ‘time-out’. Take a few deep breaths, count to ten, or put baby down and walk around the house or sit for a minute. Play some classical music.
There are 5 S’s to help soothe baby that mimic the womb.
- Swaddling babies like to be snug, they were just in the belly not long ago and like to be cozy. So swaddle your baby so they feel secure. There are some swaddle blankets that make it very easy to swaddle.
- Side laying hold your baby so they are on their side and rock them a little. Do this while they are swaddled otherwise they will be flaying around and not feel secure.
- Shushing create a white noise to drown out other noises. You can also run the vacuum or hair dryer.
- Swinging create a rhythm/motion such as a ride in the car, stroller, a baby swing, rocking baby and standing holding and rocking baby.
- Sucking babies like to suck, it soothes them. A pacifier is great for this or the tip of a clean finger can help too.
Talk to you baby and hold them tight. Use a calm voice and shush. These are some great techniques that will help you with soothing your baby.

There is no getting around this! Newborn babies cry! This is how they communicate to us. What’s funny is, when you become a mother, you will automatically know what to do and why your baby is crying. You can read the cries. You can tell if your baby is hungry, tired or wants to be held. You just know.
Here are a few reasons why your newborn will cry:
- They are hungry
- They are hot or cold
- They need to burp
- They have gas
- They are tired
- They need to have their diaper changed
- They want to be held
- Something is bothering them or hurting them you can’t see
You simply know when your baby is hungry. Sometimes, newborns will cluster feed. Generally babies will eat every 2 to 3 hours. When they cluster feed, the feedings are closer together, maybe every hour at certain times of the day.
Newborns like to be bundled up and kept nice and warm – but not HOT. You can tell my the temperature of their skin. They really only need an extra layer then we do, a onesie under an outfit is just fine. You can tell if baby is too hot by the color of their skin (if they are red) or if they are sweating.
Some babies need to burp, if baby is just not happy after they eat, they could have reflux or simply need to burp. Babies can swallow air when they feed from nursing or a bottle. You will start to be able to tell if your baby is one who will need to burp or work it out on their own.
Babies will get gassy!! If you, Mom are eating foods that make adults gassy, it will certainly make a baby gassy. The foods you eat can have an affect on your baby. Some people will use over the counter gas drops, these didn’t do much for my kids but some they help. Gripe water is another one you can try with your baby to see if it helps them. You can find them at any drug store in the pharmacy section. You can also lay baby on their back and do bicycle movements with their legs to help work out any bubbles.
Some babies tend to fight sleep, you think it would be easy and for some it is, they can sleep anywhere. My oldest was never like that. She will still to this day fight sleep. Some babies can get over stimulated and over tired and just have a hard time going to sleep. Going into a quite room to bounce and shhhhhhshhhh them to sleep may be helpful.
Some babies don’t mind if they have a wet or dirty diaper, while some will not mind one over the other or simply not be able to stand either. This is an easy fix, most diapers have a yellow stripe down the front of the diaper, when it’s blue…well, guess what, it needs changed!
Babies like to be cuddled and close to you. They were in the womb not long ago and like to be close to you and cuddled up to you. They want to hear your voice, your heartbeat, smell you and see your face. Crying simply is a way to say I want to be close to you. You can’t spoil your baby, they need to bond. You can make changes down the road and set the boundaries, but a newborn baby and young baby needs you, you are their life support.
Sometimes when you have tried everything else, it could be a piece of thread around their little toe or finger inside a sleeper. Make sure to check their clothing and diaper. Maybe the diaper tag is poking them or their skin is caught on something or something is to tight on them.
Remember, the way babies ‘talk’ to you is by crying – that’s all they know. In my sessions, I can calm a crying baby pretty quickly.
